How to Prepare for Your First Day as a Stage Manager

That first day on a new production can be nerve-wracking, whether you’re an ASM or calling the show for the first time. Here’s what I wish I’d known—and what you can do to walk in with confidence.

  1. Know Your Show
If you haven’t already, read the script (twice!). Learn the basics about the creative team and venue.

  2. Bring the Essentials
Pens, pencils, highlighters, sticky notes, water bottle, and a portable charger. Don’t forget a notebook or your digital equivalent.

  3. Set Expectations
Arrive early and introduce yourself to everyone. Ask about house rules and team communication preferences.

  4. Listen First
Your first day is about learning the vibe, not asserting your authority. Observe, take notes, and start building trust.

  5. Stay Flexible
Something will go wrong. Roll with it. The best SMs solve problems with a calm head.

Starting with this mindset will help you build solid relationships and set yourself (and your show) up for success.
